Uncapping Knife

Tools used to peel off the thin wax layer covering the honey from the honeycombs.

Wire tightener

Tool used to tighten the wire in the frames in order for them to be reusable.

Candle making tools

People used to keep the natural beeswax warm in clay cylindrical containers. Then they dipped the wicks into the wax repeatedly until the candles reached the desired size. These clay pots did not meet any specific design specifications; they were ordinary household items.Beekeepers used this molten beeswax to make frames by the beekeepers possible.

Pair of cylindrical press

Machine used for the production of honeycomb sheets made of natural beeswax. Beekeepers use this press to make hexagonal cell traces on wax sheets, which are later placed in the “movable frames” (see Opposite). This way they help the bees continue building the cells evenly and symmetrically, making the removal of the wax plates which were later transformed into honeycomb sheets with the help of the cylindrical press.

Makeshift press

Makeshift construction, used before the invention of the honey extractor, for pressing the honeycombs to release the honey.

Stone honey extractor

Makeshift stone honey extractor. It belongs to theMelissourgos family. It is estimated that honey extractors such as this one were used with the onset of organised beekeeping (1st c. BC) until the mid-20th century (before the invention of movable frames).

Gkiroulas (Kiroulas)

Old honey extraction tool.Beekeepers put honeycomb pieces into the “dorva” (woven straw bag) and pressed with a pair of wooden sticks. This way honey was filtered from wax.
